Introduction to basics of grammar: The English Alphabet

We have a set of letters in a fixed order in any language that is called alphabet of that language. Such as- English language, Hindi language, Urdu language etc.

Letter: A symbol usually written or printed representing a speech sound and constituting a unit of an alphabet.

  • There are 26 letters in the English alphabet.
  • We write these letters in 2 ways:
  1. Capital letters (Upper Case)
  2. Small letters (Lower Case)

The capital letters may be written like this:

Small Letters or Lower Case

We can divide these letters in two groups:

  1. Vowels: Aa, Ee, Ii, Oo and Uu are called vowels.
  2. Consonants: All the letters except vowels are called consonants.

We can learn vowels and consonants better with the help of Hindi alphabets.

NOTE:

  • All sentences start with capital letters. Such as-This is water. That is milk. etc.
  • The first letter of name and surname is capital letter. Such as- Joseph Jacob, Ishmael Abraham etc.
  • Uses capital letters for abbreviation. Such as- CPU- Central Processing Unit, PM- Prime Minister etc.
